Cyclicals, which conversely could be dumped if growth stalls, are industrial companies or those that make or sell basic materials, technology or energy — the stuff that growing firms need and confident managers buy if sales are starting to increase. Companies that produce building products have climbed 224 percent more than the median performance of cyclical industries, and forest and paper products are 135 percent ahead of the median, Lee said. Still, short interest, or investors betting the stocks will fall, is higher for cyclicals than for defensive companies that make products people need regardless of the economy. After the lows in recessions in 1981-82 and 1990-91, he said, cyclical stocks led briefly, but the defensive stocks “took leadership and never relinquished it again until the bottom of the next recession. read more

Research In Motion ( RIMM – news – people ) disappointed investors with an earnings forecast that wasn’t quite as rosy as analysts expected, and a round of analyst downgrades didn’t help as shares of the BlackBerry maker lost 17%. Hewlett-Packard ( HPQ – news – people ) Thursday, where the tech heavyweight issued 2010 guidance in line with expectations and predicted the IT market will return to growth next year. KB Home ( KBH – news – people ) enjoyed little benefit after posting a third-quarter loss of 87 cents a share, steeper than expected. The news followed a disappointing dip in existing home sales reported by the National Association of Realtors Thursday, but Friday morning’s August new home sales report from the government was slightly more encouraging. NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — Crude-oil futures fell Friday for a third session, heading for their biggest weekly loss in more than two months as worries over weak petroleum demand continued. Stocks and crude futures moved in the same direction in 13 out of the past 17 sessions since the beginning of the month, according to data compiled by MarketWatch. Analysts at Goldman Sachs on Friday raised their forecasts for global oil demand for the fourth quarter of 2009 and for 2010 by 1. Goldman kept its end-of-year target for benchmark crude prices at $85 a barrel, along with an average 2010 price forecast of $90 a barrel and its end-of-2010 target of $95 a barrel.
