(Stock Trading News) US stocks open higher with boost from GM – MarketWatch

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tony @ 4:44 pm

Both Moody’s Investors Service and Standard & Poor’s downgraded their credit ratings on the chemicals giant late Monday, based on Kuwait’s decision over the weekend to back out of a joint venture with the firm. The price was hammered out months ago before life insurers got hit by the global financial crisis, but Nationwide Mutual maintains the deal will benefit policyholders — who own the company — over the long term. The Dow industrials lost 31 points, the S&P 500 fell 3 points and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 19 points. (Stock Trading News) Stocks Fall for Fourth Straight Week – Washington Post

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tony @ 4:32 pm

MBIA and Discover Financial Services each slumped more than 10 percent, driving financial institutions to the biggest retreat in the Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index, following evidence the year-long recession is deepening. The National Association of Realtors said the median resale price of single-family houses dropped 13 percent last month, the most since the group began keeping records in 1968. General Motors fell 18 percent, despite an end-of-week rebound, as its debt was cut deeper into junk territory. Textron , maker of Bell helicopters, lost 15 percent after saying profit this quarter will trail forecasts. Yields on Treasury securities increased as the government sold a record $66 billion of two- and five-year notes to finance the widening budget deficit. The Treasury will auction $26 billion of three-month bills and $27 billion of six-month bills on Dec. read more

Stock Trading News – US grains edge up as China expands stocks plan – Reuters

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tony @ 3:44 pm

China’s National Development and Reform Commission last week approved plans to buy an additional 20 million tonnes of corn for state stockpiles, much more than traders had expected, an industry source familiar with the results of the meeting said on Monday. Chinese demand and fears about Argentine crops also supported corn but to a far lesser extent as abundant supplies continued to weigh on both corn and wheat, said Kazuhiko Saito, a strategist at Interes Capital Management Co in Tokyo. News that Saudi Arabia expected to import up to 800,000 tonnes of milling wheat in the year to September, 2009, as it seeks to build up stocks was not enough to keep prices in the positive zone. Syria’s state grains purchasing agency has rejected all bids and made no purchase in an international tender to buy 200,000 tonnes of optional-origin soft wheat because prices were too high, European traders said on Monday.
