A 'muted' rally in tech stocks is seen as likely – International Herald Tribune(Stock Trading News)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tony @ 6:37 pm

But this year, with high energy and food prices, the housing slump and the credit market crisis muting consumer demand, Wall Street is bracing for a subdued performance from the technology industry even during its busiest manufacturing season. While analysts say the results reflect weaknesses in Dell as much as in the broader industry, even the most bullish forecasts call for only a 10 percent to 15 percent rise in technology stocks this autumn – which would barely take the sector back to where it was at the start of 2008. The S&P Information Technology 45 index has fallen about 13 percent so far this year and the Merrill Lynch Technology 100 index has lost about 14 percent. Technology stocks in the S&P 500 index are trading at about 16 times estimates of earnings for the next 12 months, compared with almost a multiple of 19 this time last year, according to Thomson Reuters Proprietary Research. The weak economy weighed on the technology sector last year, with the S&P Tech 45 index rising only 5 percent in the last four months of 2007 compared with a 10 percent rise over the same period in 2006. read more

(Stock Trading News) The Right Stocks for Your IRA – Motley Fool

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tony @ 6:02 pm

What I mean by smart asset location is knowing which investments to put in retirement accounts like IRAs and 401(k)s, and which to leave in regular (taxable) accounts. True, these companies’ dividends generally qualify for the lower tax rate, but if you have a long-term time horizon, are years away from retirement, and want to take full advantage of dividend reinvestment, it would be wise to defer those taxes. Even then, if you’ve held the stock longer than one year, the long-term capital gains tax rates, currently capped at 15%, are lower than your income tax rate. If you’re unsure of how to optimize your portfolio, Motley Fool Rule Your Retirement advisor Robert Brokamp recently detailed the best location for a wide range of investments. If you believe a comment is abusive or otherwise violates our Fool’s Rules , please report it via the Report this Comment icon found on every comment. read more

Stock Trading News – GLOBAL MARKETS-Sterling tumbles, stocks hit by oil rise – Reuters

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tony @ 5:52 pm

LONDON, Aug 28 (Reuters) – Weak UK housing and retail sales data knocked sterling to a 12-year low on Thursday, while oil prices edged up as Tropical Storm Gustav threatened to damage U. The euro extended its rebound from Tuesday’s six-month low against the dollar as recent hawkish comments by euro zone central bankers dampened expectations of a rate cut. The Nationwide building society said UK house prices fell almost 2 percent on the month in August to post their biggest annual drop since 1991. A survey from the Confederation of British Industry showed UK retail sales fell at their sharpest annual pace in at least a quarter of a century in August. Filed under: Uncategorized — Tony @ 5:26 pm

That’s why we pair up stock-split announcements with the sentiments of more than 115,000 members of Motley Fool CAPS . Yet as the market takes its toll on share prices, the need to split shares may decline as well, causing a dearth of split announcements — just as we’ve seen over the past few months. Top-rated CAPS All-Star member ChrisGraley sees the company continuing its forward momentum so long as there is demand for oil . Oil prices are gonna have wild swings depending on oil news, but in the last 2 years, the demand curve has been trending about the same as it was the 3 previous years and it’s trending upward more every day. It pays to start your own research on these stocks on Motley Fool CAPS . Bank failure rattles US stocks – International Herald Tribune- Stock Trading News

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tony @ 5:12 pm

Bank of America and JPMorgan Chase dropped more than 1 percent each after Columbian Bank and Trust of Topeka, Kansas, collapsed amid bad real-estate loans. Columbian Bank, with $752 million in assets and $622 million in total deposits, was shuttered by the Kansas state bank commissioner's office and the Federal Deposit Insurance, on Friday. The Korean bank ended talks on a possible investment after Lehman demanded a price 50 percent higher than its book value, the Maeil Business newspaper said, citing an unnamed official in the banking industry. Declines in the common stocks of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae accelerated last week to more than 90 percent for the year and yields on their preferred shares more than doubled on speculation Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson may need to bail them out, reducing or wiping out the value of the securities. The Fed chairman Ben Bernanke, the European Central Bank president Jean-Claude Trichet, former officials and economists meeting in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, appear to be split over whether policy makers should be made responsible for financial stability and how closely to heed the concerns of Wall Street. read more

Stocks end mixed on rising oil, financial worries – The Associated Press(Stock Trading News)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tony @ 4:51 pm

NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street finished mixed Thursday after investors largely shrugged off a jump in oil prices and focused instead on a bullish call on Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. Stocks closed off their lows of the session after a Ladenburg Thalmann analyst raised his rating on Lehman to “buy,” saying he believes the nation’s fourth-biggest investment bank has become a hostile takeover candidate. The partial recovery in financials as well as gains by energy producers themselves helped contain investors’ anxiety over a jump in oil of more than $5 a barrel. Prices rose as investors questioned whether tensions with Russia would disrupt energy shipments from the world’s second-largest oil producer. Investors responded to Thursday’s climb in oil by sending shares of energy companies higher. But the Ladenburg Thalmann analyst’s note helped the sector, by arguing that Lehman Brothers’ management values the company at a premium and would be willing to sell at the right price. read more

Bonds fall as climbing stocks squash safety bid – guardian.co.uk- About: Stock Trading News

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tony @ 4:35 pm

Treasury debt prices eased on Friday as soothing words from investor Warren Buffett and the potential purchase of a piece of Lehman Brothers bolstered stock futures and squashed any safe-haven bid for bonds. Lehman Brothers shares jumped in pre-market trade on Friday after state-run Korea Development Bank said Lehman was one of its options for acquisitions. The Fed chairman is generally expected to talk tough on inflation, although pressure there has been easing with falling commodity prices in recent weeks. Investors are also keeping a close watch on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, whose stocks have collapsed this week amid speculation that the government will eventually step in to bail out the two mortgage finance giants. read more
