MANILA, Philippines–Stocks may experience a technical rally this week after sharp losses in previous sessions exhausted selling pressure from investors, market watchers said. Despite this, issues on the Philippine Stock Exchange will continue to be weak as concerns linger about the prospect of higher interest rates caused by rising prices of food and petroleum products. Online broker AB Capital Securities also expects a technical rally this week, but cautioned clients that any upward move would likely be short-lived. This week, investors will be watching the US Federal Reserve’s decision on interest rates, with market pollsters calling an 80-percent chance that the Fed will cut interest rates by 25 basis points. Locally, investors will be sorting through listed companies’ first-quarter earnings reports that will be coming due, with many watching for the effects that rising energy and food prices have on consumer spending. read more

Verizon (VZ) is expected to report first-quarter earnings of 62 cents a share, according to analysts surveyed by FactSet Research. Visa (V) is forecast to post earnings of 45 cents a share in the fiscal second quarter, according to analysts polled by FactSet Research. STMicroelectronics NV (STM) is likely to report a first-quarter profit of 19 cents a share, FactSet Research said. That makes it all the more remarkable that Kinetics Market Opportunities, a financial-sector fund, gained 4 percent over the past year, a period during which the Dow Jones U. What started with subprime mortgages has spread to Citibank , Merrill Lynch , Fannie Mae and other giants of finance. What you will find is a wad of financial-exchange stocks, such as Nasdaq Stock Market, CME Group and London Stock Exchange . The new year hasn’t been kind so far to exchange stocks or Market Opportunities (KMKNX), which lost 22 percent in the first 10 weeks of 2008. Paul Mampilly, one of the fund’s co-managers, says the group has "been lumped in with the companies that are in the cross hairs of the credit problem because they are categorized as financials. read more
