Nasdaq leads revival as US stocks ignore consumer fears – The Times- Stock Trading News

Filed under: Stock Trading News — Tony @ 3:37 pm

US stocks rose on Friday, as optimism about benign inflation data and gains in financial stocks overshadowed concerns about consumer sentiment. Financial shares clawed back from Thursday’s sharp losses after Citigroup recommended investors buy Lehman Brothers stock. European stocks extended their losses on Friday afternoon as US stock futures trimmed gains after retailer JC Penney lowered its quarterly earnings forecast, fuelling worries about consumer spending. Gold fell more than 2% in a broad commodities sell-off on Friday, with a rise in the dollar and softer oil prices dampening the metal’s allure as an alternative investment. read more

Stocks end the week down – Los Angeles Times- Topic: Stock Trading News

Filed under: Stock Trading News — Tony @ 3:34 pm

The stock market finished the week with a decline Friday as the financial health of the consumer came into focus after a government report showed the weakest growth in personal spending in 17 months. Investors felt some relief after the government said a closely followed inflation gauge tied to consumer spending rose only 0. With so-called core inflation back within the Fed’s target of 1% to 2%, it could be easier for the central bank to justify further interest rate cuts without fear of driving up prices by adding too much money to the economy. Trading was fairly muted after days of volatility that sent stocks sharply higher early in the week and sharply lower near the end. Perhaps most watched will be Friday’s Labor Department report on payrolls, which economists on average estimate fell by about 50,000 in March after a 63,000 drop in February. read more

Sensex ends 131 pts down; Mid, smallcap stocks shine – Sify- Stock Trading News

Filed under: Stock Trading News — Tony @ 3:03 pm

Save for a couple of bright spells early on in the day and for a short while when it staged a strong rally from lower levels in mid afternoon trade, the Sensex never really looked good enough to sign off on a positive note today. Even as a majority of Sensex and Nifty components struggled for support, several stocks from midcap and smallcap segments moved up sharply on sustained buying enquiries today. Advanta, Amtek India, FSL, India Infoline, Maytas, Bombay Rayon Fashions, Raymond, HT Media, Havells India, Essar Shipping, Emami, IL & FS, IndusInd Bank, Atlas Copco and Ashapura Minechemicals were among the other big gainers from the midcap space. FAG Bearings, Cholamandalam DBS, Cambridge Solutions, Essel Propack, Panchmahal Steel, Balkrishna Industries, Apar Industries, JB Chemicals, Kemrock Industries, Andhra Petro, Lloyds Metal, Timken, Hitachi Home Appliances and Ruchi Infra also ended with hefty gains today. Though the benchmark indices – Sensex and Nifty – ended with sharp losses, the market breadth remained strong today thanks to a good show by midcap and smallcap stocks. read more

(Stock Trading News) DJ US Stocks Up; Upped Bear Stearns Bid, Home Sales Help – Onet.pl

Filed under: Stock Trading News — Tony @ 2:54 pm

Early Monday, JPMorgan increased its original bid for Bear to about $10 a share from $2 a share. This time last week, financial shares were plunging in value after fears the credit crunch had rendered the fifth largest investment bank on Wall Street near worthless and on fears that no end was in sight for the housing crisis. Further, the Fed’s $30 billion in financing associated with the transaction has been amended so that JPMorgan Chase will bear the first $1 billion of any losses associated with the Bear Stearns assets being financed and the Fed will fund the remaining $29 billion. The Fed-backed JPMorgan buyout offer for Bear jump-started a tumultuous week for financial stocks last week, with earnings reports from three major Wall Street banks eventually helping drive the larger markets higher for the week. read more
