Fundamentals of an index – Economic Times- About: Stock Trading News

Filed under: Stock Trading News — Tony @ 11:15 am

How an index is made up and what it indicates The stock market index has always been the investor’s best guide. If the Sensex goes down, it indicates that the stock price of most of the major stocks on the BSE have gone down. There are index for the metal stocks, FMCG stocks, automobile stocks etc. The level of index at any point of time reflects the free-float market value of 30 component stocks relative to a base period. This market capitalisation is further multiplied by the free-float factor to determine the free-float market capitalisation. This is because most stock indices only reflect a portion of the actual market and not the market as a whole. read more

Stocks Concede Early Gains On More Bearish Data – FOXBusiness- Topic: Stock Trading News

Filed under: Stock Trading News — Tony @ 11:01 am

But it wasn’t meant to be as more ugly economic reports spooked the market and sent the Dow more than 140 points into the red today. Wall Street kicked the day off in positive territory but fell sharply on the bearish economic data. The only bright spot of the latest data is that weekly jobless claims fell by 9,000 last week to 349,000, roughly in line with what economists were expecting. However, that positive was countered with the Labor Department also saying the four-week average for claims, which gives a better picture of labor market trends, rose to 360,500 — the highest level since claims spiked in October 2005 in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Dow Jones Euro Stoxx 50 , a index tracking the 50 largest companies of Europe, rose 19. Delayed quotes provided by Interactive Data Managed Solutions . read more

Topic: Stock Trading News – Stocks Turn Positive After Pullback – The Associated Press

Filed under: Stock Trading News — Tony @ 10:52 am

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks carved modest gains Wednesday, reversing early losses as investors appeared to digest unpleasant signals about the economy with unusual equanimity and draw comfort from the notion that the Federal Reserve didn’t appear overly concerned about inflation. Investors initially upset over a rise in consumer prices and lackluster readings on home construction seemed to set aside some of their concerns after minutes from the Fed’s meeting last month didn’t reveal sizable concerns about inflation. The central bank did lower its expectations for the economy this year amid weakness in the credit markets and in housing — a development that wasn’t likely surprising to Wall Street. And while the rate cuts made last month in response to the tight credit markets came as a relief at the time, “the credit markets are still very stressed out, if not shut,” O’Donoghue said. David Kelly, chief market strategist for JPMorgan Funds, the mutual fund arm of JPMorgan Asset Management, said the economic figures released Wednesday weren’t that bad but that Wall Street’s preoccupation with credit worries have tainted how investors see the economy. Oil closed above $100 for the first time Tuesday, derailing a stock market rally and renewing Wall Street’s inflation concerns. read more
