Stocks Fall, Giving Up Early Gains – The Associated Press- Stock Trading News

Filed under: Stock Trading News — Tony @ 7:02 am

NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street ended a tumultuous week with a sharp decline Friday, backtracking following two days of stunning gains as investors turned cautious and cashed in some of their winnings. The week, which started with a 465-point drop in the Dow soon after the market opened Tuesday, showed that the stock market is still fractious but may be going through healthy process of trying to establish a bottom following weeks of sharp declines. But the advance proved short-lived and the eventual decline wasn’t surprising given that investors putting down bets ahead of the weekend were coming off two days of big gains — including 400 points in the Dow. A day later, on Tuesday, Wall Street had an astonishing about-face, with the Dow swinging more than 630 points and turning a sharp sell-off into huge gains. Treasurys down as stocks continue rebound – CNNMoney.com- Topic: Stock Trading News

Filed under: Stock Trading News — Tony @ 6:52 am

Government bond prices were volatile after worries of economic slowness and further interest rate cuts drove yields significantly lower early this week. The stock and government bond market often trade in opposite directions, as investors alternate between favoring safe assets like Treasurys and opting for the higher potential returns of riskier stocks. Earlier in the year, the prospect of the insurers’ problems wreaking havoc in the municipal bond market spurred demand for Treasurys and federal agency debt. Earlier in the week there was robust demand for Treasurys that drove the 2-year yield down to its lowest level in almost four years and caused the 30-year yield for the first time to break below 4. Stocks take dive worldwide – Seattle Post Intelligencer- About: Stock Trading News

Filed under: Stock Trading News — Tony @ 6:25 am

FRANKFURT, Germany — Fears that the United States may be in a recession reverberated around the world Monday, sending stock markets from Frankfurt to Mumbai, India, into a tailspin and puncturing the hopes of many investors that Europe and Asia will be able to sidestep an American downturn. And in a sign that the United States could join the sell-off Tuesday, trading in stock index futures pointed to a substantial decline when markets reopen on Wall Street. The angst about the United States belies the popular theory that Europe and Asia are not as dependent on the American economy as they once were, in part because they trade more with each other. Investors in Asia have been in a state of denial about a possible recession in the United States, said Adrian Mowat, JPMorgan’s chief strategist in Asia. read more
