Stocks, dollar fall on interest rate confusion – CTV.ca(Stock Trading News)

Federal Reserve’s interest rate meeting earlier this month failed to provide a clue as to when the central bank might move to cut interest rates. Markets moved higher last week on hopes the Fed will cut its funds rate on or before its next rate meeting Sept. The slide followed a comment from Bank of Canada deputy governor Pierre Duguay Monday that economic life has changed after the recent upheaval in global credit markets, which may cause it to reconsider raising interest rates next week. (Stock Trading News) Stocks Drop on Housing, Mortgage Woes – BusinessWeek

Countrywide Financial ( CFC ) fell almost 5% after a Lehman Brothers analyst cut estimates for the mortgage lenders, partly to reflect increased loan foreclosures and losses. Among stocks in the news on Monday, Gateway ( GTW ) agreed to be bought by Taiwan’s Acer Inc. Home Depot ( HD ) reportedly agreed to an 18% cut to the selling price of its Home Depot supply unit. Marsh & McLennan Companies ( MMC ) rose 1% after it agreed to buy back $800 million of its stock. read more

The stock market bounced back last week, with the three major indexes all posting weekly gains of more than 2 percent. In fact, it was the best performance for the Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index since March. An important measure of stock-market volatility, the Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility Index, or VIX, dropped 31 percent during the week, its biggest weekly decline since the index started in 1990, according to Bloomberg News. The stock gains on Wall Street were mirrored in markets around the world, which have been bolstered by the efforts of central banks to stabilize the financial system after the shocks set off by the subprime mortgage crisis in the United States. Stocks rebounded from a monthlong skid that sent the Standard & Poor's 500 index down 6. For the week, the Standard & Poor's 500 Index advanced 2. Bank of America agreed to invest $2 billion in the nation's biggest mortgage lender, assuaging concern that a Countrywide bankruptcy would further roil the housing market. HONG KONG (MarketWatch) — Asian indexes were mostly lower Friday, with shares in Hong Kong pulled lower by Bank of China after it and other Chinese banks Thursday reported their exposure to the U. Chinese shares set another intraday high, shrugging off disclosures by the banks, while Japanese stocks lost ground on trading firms such as Marubeni Corp. Hong Kong stocks lead Asian decline – MarketWatch Intraday data provided by Comstock , a division of Interactive Data Corp. Historical and current end-of-day data provided by FT Interactive Data . (Stock Trading News) Most Asian stocks tiptoe higher – Financial Times

Asian stock markets were broadly higher on Wednesday morning on speculation that the Federal Reserve would try to sustain US demand and tame the credit crisis by lowering interest rates. The Japanese stock market surprised observers with a morning of dull stability after days of see-sawing trade. But falls in banking and other financial stocks were countered by a heavy slide in the oil price overnight in US trading, which is positive for many Japanese share prices. Meanwhile, Japanese and South Korean finance officials discussed the effects of the credit market crisis in Seoul this morning. Koji Omi, Japanâs finance minister, said the US subprime mortgage collapse and high oil prices remained a risk to global economic growth. Kwon O-kyu, South Koreaâs finance minister, said his country and Japan should work together to limit the effects of trade imbalances and global market turmoil. read more
